Newcomers to painting as well as experienced painters are welcome to participate in this class. Each student will receive individualized instruction that matches their level of experience.

Beginners will learn to mix color and practice basic skills in painting. Those with more experience will be given assignments that challenge them and improve their technical skills while enhancing their mastery of color and composition.

Techniques in water-based acrylic painting including the use of mediums, glazes, washes and impasto will be offered. Students also will be introduced to a variety of approaches to the craft of painting including wet on wet, underpainting, mixed media, and painting with a painting knife.

This class meets for three 3-week sessions throughout the spring. Each session will feature a different subject or approach to painting inspired by samples on view in Paris museums or traveling exhibitions. For example, this spring a show entitled Jardins will show at the Grand Palais. It suggests a perfect theme for springtime painting in Paris.

Acrylic paints and mediums are supplied. Students will receive a supply list and addresses for selected Paris art supply stores at the first class meeting.

Drawing has the power to enrich anyone’s life. Adult learners come to a drawing class for many reasons: some have been drawing since childhood, others have longed to try drawing but have either doubted their ability or have not yet found the right opportunity.

This class offers an opportunity for everyone interested in drawing to enjoy expert, individualized instruction within a small group setting.

Three 3-week long sessions meet throughout the spring in various locations: indoors in the instructor’s studio, in museums or cafés, outdoors along the Seine, in parks and in other inspiring locations throughout Paris.

Techniques in pencil, charcoal, ink, pastels, and watercolor are taught along with drawing skills that include light and shade, depth, perspective and proportion. Go to Jan OLSSON’s teaching blog to see examples of her students’ drawings along with photos of her classes.

Specialty papers and drawing ink are provided. A supply list and addresses of Paris art supply stores will be provided at the first class meeting.

The Basilica of Saint Denis is a large medieval abbey church of unique historical and architectural importance. Its choir, completed in 1144, is considered to be the first Gothic church.

Built on the grave of Saint-Denis, who was beheaded in the 3rd century, the abbey, where the kinds of France and their families were buried for centuries, is often referred to as the “royal necropolis of France.”

The basilica is a museum of sculptures with its magnificent recumbent statues which adorn the royal tombs.

Come and discover this jewel of gothic art.

"Meursault, Contre Enquête", "The Meursault Investigation" by Kamel Daoud

For the final Book Group of 2016-17, we have a remarkable double-header: L’Etranger and The Meursault Investigation. A novel as short in length as it is titanic in stature, Albert Camus’ L’Etranger – translated into The Outsider or The Stranger -- recounts a chillingly detached young man who kills an Arab on a beach in French colonial Algeria. Published in 1942, the same year as his essay The Myth of Sisyphus, L’Etranger spurred fierce debate about the absurdity of life – a pillar of existential thought – and about responsibility for one’s acts. The Meursault Investigation (Meursault, Contre-Enquête) by Kamel Daoud (2013) is a proposed sequel to the narrative recounted in L’Etranger. Seen through the eyes of the brother of the murdered Arab, it paints a tableau of French indifference to racism and Algeria’s bloody descent into Islamism after the colonial period.  Honoured with a coveted Prix Goncourt for first novel in 2015, this work, written by an Algerian journalist who was the son of a policeman, offers a gritty counterpoint to the abstraction of Camus.

Have an amazing idea for a film, but don't know how to begin writing it?

Learn from master teacher and writer John Jacobsen in his first-ever screenwriting workshop offered in Paris. He will take you through the fundamentals of screenwriting—structure, character, dialogue, theme, etc.--using film clips and samples. There will be time for you to share your ideas with the group as well as work them through individually with the teacher. By the end of the week you will have a good idea of how to build an outline and develop a screenplay. Time permitting, John also will discuss the screenplay in the marketplace including agents, readers, submissions procedures, and marketability.

Students can range from beginners to professionals, from those with just an idea to those with developed screenplays. In addition to a welcome drinks party following student check-in on Sunday, and a farewell dinner (additional cost TBD) on Friday, optional film-related activities will be planned for two afternoons during the session.

Register soon; class size is limited to 12 people.
