McCarthy Pinhole 3Take a break from the digital world and discover the origins and the intrigue of traditional photography. Pinhole photography is a magical process that allows us to see the world around us in a completely new way.

Working with a metal coffee can and light sensitive photo paper, you'll explore the entire process from making a camera, to making the first exposures, and finally creating the positive prints. You'll take a number of pictures, creating the original "negative", and then transform at least one of these into a finished positive photograph. A remarkably simple and yet powerful photographic process that students will be able to continue on their own after the class.

Students can expect to:
  • get hands-on experience through practical assignments
Course requirements
  • Participants are asked to bring a round metal coffee or tea canister. The Illy brand coffee cans (found at Monoprix) or Franprix brand tea cans work the best.
  • Suitable for all levels of photographers
