In the late 19th century, Paris’ reputation for its ‘decadent’ lifestyle incarnated by some cocottes or courtesans, dancers and actresses was not usurped. The writings and paintings alluding to these unconventional behaviors, although shocking for some, attracted many readers and fascinated a certain public. To many foreign travelers, Paris was the incarnation of a new Babylon.

We will illustrate our presentation by telling the story of some famous courtesans, with a special mention of their representation in painting and literature.
