For the final Book Group of 2016-17, we have a remarkable double-header: L’Étranger and The Meursault Investigation. A novel as short in length as it is titanic in stature, Albert Camus’ L’Étranger – translated into The Outsider or The Stranger -- recounts a chillingly detached young man who kills an Arab on a beach in French colonial Algeria. Published in 1942, the same year as his essay The Myth of Sisyphus, L’Étranger spurred fierce debate about the absurdity of life – a pillar of existential thought – and about responsibility for one’s acts. The Meursault Investigation (Meursault, Contre-Enquête) by Kamel Daoud (2013) is a proposed sequel to the narrative recounted in L’Étranger. Seen through the eyes of the brother of the murdered Arab, it paints a tableau of French indifference to racism and Algeria’s bloody descent into Islamism after the colonial period.  Honoured with a coveted Prix Goncourt for first novel in 2015, this work, written by an Algerian journalist who was the son of a policeman, offers a gritty counterpoint to the abstraction of Camus.

Pour la dernière réunion du Book Group pour la saison 2016-17, un double plaisir nous attend : L’Étranger et Meursault, Contre-Enquête.  Un roman aussi court qu’il est légendaire, L’Étranger d’Albert Camus raconte la vie d’un jeune homme froid et singulaire qui abat un Arabe sur une plage. Publie en 1942 – la même année que son essai Le Mythe de Sisyphe – L’Étranger a déclenché un vif débat sur l’absurdité de la vie (concept-clé de la pensée existentialiste) et la responsabilité. Meursault, Contre-Enquête, par Kamel Daoud (2013), nous propose la suite des évènements racontés dans L’Étranger, cette fois à travers les yeux du frère de l’Arabe assassiné.  On se heurte à l’indifférence française face au racisme et on témoigne de la descente de l’Algérie vers le paroxysme islamiste à la fin de l’époque coloniale: une perspective douloureuse et écorchée par la réalité, par rapport au détachement du roman de Camus.  Écrit par un journaliste algérien fils d’un gendarme, cette œuvre a été couronnée du prix Goncourt du premier roman en 2015.
