Picasso and Braque first introduced collage as they invented a new pictorial space in their early cubist paintings. Dadaists such as Max Ernst, Kurt Schwitters, Hanna Hoch and Raoul Haussman used collage to express their interests in the subconscious, creating a radical new way of associating images.

Robert Rauschenberg and Nancy Spero followed with collages from mass media, expanding their range of expression by adding paint, stenciling, and found objects.

Acrylics, which are simply paints made with a synthetic glue base, are the perfect medium for collage as they readily adhere to paper, fabrics and wood. Collage items can be anything from metro ticket stubs to newspapers to photographs.

Join us in learning and practicing techniques of combining acrylics with collage as you respond to challenging assignments that will encourage you to express yourself and your current experience be it life in a new culture, travel, the fascinating interplay of languages or anything else you might imagine. Acrylic paints, mediums and some tools are supplied. Participants will be responsible for providing panels (please request a supply list from the WICE office).

Instructor: Jan Olsson holds a Master of Fine Arts in Drawing and is an engaging teacher with many years of experience teaching. She is also a highly skilled practicing artist who exhibits internationally. See the artist's website at http://janolssonart.com for more information.
