Jan Olsson’s printmaking studio is located at La Ruche, a picturesque artist’s colony founded in 1902. This is an exceptional opportunity to experience this historic site while learning to make monotype prints. Monotypes are beloved by contemporary artists for their spontaneity and textural beauty. If you remember the fun you had finger-painting as a child, making a monotype print feels much the same. Applying buttery printing inks to smooth plastic plates creates a world of wonderful textures and tones. One can also incorporate color by using collage elements.

The resulting prints are unique, one-of-a-kind images. They enhance any subject with their unique properties. The process is at once challenging and playful, suited to a wide range of creative sensibilities. If you enjoy surprises and learning new techniques this class if for you. Printmaking plates, paper, inks and tools are provided. Students will need to provide personal items such as gloves, coverups and collage items.

Instructor: Jan Olsson installed her etching press, “The Queen Bee”, at La Ruche in 1994. Since then she has exhibited etchings, collagraphs, monotypes and artist’s books created in her studio located on the ground floor of “La Rotonde”, a building designed by the Eiffel Studios that is situated at the center of a walled garden within a community of working artists. You may see reproductions of Jan’s prints on her website: http://janolssonart.com and photographs of La Ruche at http://www.laruche-montparnasse.com/
