The Jewish History of Paris

A walk through the historic heart of Paris, with its rich history and many hidden stories.

The tour will discuss the medieval history of the Jews, France as a mecca during the Revolution and the 19th century, the Dreyfus Affair, the Holocaust, and the rebuilding of the Jewish community.

This walk will take us from the heart of the first Jewish community of the Ile de la Cité to the modern day of fashionable Rue des Rosiers.

We will look at the facade of Notre Dame for its Jewish symbolism, then go to the Monument of the French Martyrs of the Deportation. We will head to the Marais, to the Shoah Memorial and to the Hotel Beauvais, an example of Jewish property stolen by the Vichy government. We will see the Art Nouveau rue Pavée synagogue, then walk down Rue des Rosiers to the synagogues, shops, and boutiques. We will wind up on rue des Archives at the only medieval cloisters left in Paris.

A 15/20 minute break will be included during this walk.                 
Please come prepared for the weather and wear comfortable shoes.
